Posting Photos on LSA-Talk

Because many of our members receive their emails using a slow connection (dial-up), we have placed a message size restriction of 200KB on all LSA-Talk emails. The 200KB limit is only an issue when sending digial photos to LSA-Talk -- standard plain text emails without a photo are very small and should never exceed the message size limitation. The following two rules MUST be adhered to when posting a photo on LSA-Talk:

  1. The photo must be a JPEG (.jpg) file type. No other file types are allowed. This is the defalt file type for all digital cameras.
  2. The total message size, which includes your photo attachment and any text you type, must not exceed 200 KB.

Because most digital camera photos are 800K or more, the file size of your photo must be reduced or compressed before sending it.

FastStone Image Viewer

FastStone Image Viewer is an easy to use image browser that can also convert images and even perform some basic editing (red eye, etc). It can also crop, resize and compress images for emailing. The program can be downloaded from http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm.

Emailing a Photo using FastStone

After installing FastStone Image Viewer:.

  1. Start Image Viewer and browse to the photo you would like to send.
  2. Open the File->Email menu (or just press F6)
  3. The default option of 640x480 is usually fine, but you can change the size and preview the picture before sending.
  4. Click the "Send Email" button and FastStone will open up a new email message with your compress photo already attached.

Note that if you use "Web Mail" such as www.yahoo.com, then you will need to first click "Copy To" which will save your compressed photo on your computer. Then you will be able to attach it using your web browser (IE, Firefox, Netscape, etc).

Picasa

Picasa is a free photo viewing and editing tool available from Google. It catalogs all pictures on your computer and displays them all in one easy place, called a "Library". It has some very good (basic) editing tools, and is also able to compress photos for emailing to LSA-Talk. The PIcasa website is at http://picasa.google.com. Note that you must have some sort of email program installed, such as Outlook Express, Netscape, Thunderbird, and the like. Another option is to use Picasa's own web-based mail, called (Hello Mail).

Download Picasa

Assuming you are using some version of Microsoft Windows...

  1. Download Picasa from http://picasa.google.com/download/index.html.
  2. Double-click the install and follow the directions.
  3. Check Picasa's email options by selecting "Options" under the "Tools" menu. It is suggested you change the maximum photo size to about 400 or 500 pixels.

Send a Photo using Picasa

After installing Picasa, follow the steps below to send a photo to LSA-Talk.

  1. Start Picasa and find the photo you would like to send.
  2. Double-click the photo to bring up the viewer/editor
  3. If desired, you can edit and crop the picture before sending, but this is not necessary
  4. Click the "Email" button at the bottom of the screen. This will send all pictures you currently have in your "PIcture Tray" - you should see only the one photo you are viewing in the Picture Tray at this point.
  5. Depending on how Picasa is configured, it will either bring up a blank email with the photo already attached, or it may ask you how you want to send the photo. If you don't have an email program installed, you can use "Picasa Mail", which uses Hello mail.
  6. Enter the LSA-Talk email address and add any text to the message you are sending. You should also change the subject line to something that makes more sense.
  7. Click "send"
